Inside our 260,000 t/yr Steel Workshop
A look at how a structural steel order moves from drawing to delivery through our in-house fabrication workshop.
Most of the steel on our projects never leaves our own control between drawing and delivery. The workshop cuts, drills, welds and coats structural members in-house, which is the difference between quoting a programme and actually holding it.
A typical order starts with shop drawings derived from the structural model, checked against the fabrication tolerances the frame actually needs rather than a generic standard. Members are cut and drilled on CNC equipment, welded by certified fabricators, and inspected against the specification before they ever reach the protective-coatings line.
Capacity at the workshop runs to roughly 260,000 tonnes a year across structural sections, plate work and bespoke architectural steel. The advantage of fabricating in-house is not primarily cost, though that helps. It is that when a design changes two weeks before erection, the people who need to know are down the corridor, not on the other end of a subcontract.
